Junior freestyler Fred Mitchell and breast stroke specialist Phil Jonkheer were chosen co-captains of next year's Harvard swimming team in an election held yesterday.
Mitchell, from Palo Alto, Calif., is the present captain of the Crimson, which will conclude a very successful 1972-73 season a week from now at the NCAA's in Knoxville, Tenn. Jonkheer, who is from Manila, the Philippines, joins Mitchell as co-captain after breaking one of two University records left from the pre-Don Gambril era, the 100-yd. breast stroke, at the Easterns last weekend at West Point.
The pair, along with diver John Zakotnik and freestyler Paul Scott, will return as the only seniors on the freshman and sophomore dominated squad which will lose no one to graduation. The prospects for the coming season will be exceptionally bright if Gambril can attract another top-notch first-year contingent to complement the talent already on hand.
Mitchell has been a standout performer in the freestyle events ever since he began varsity competition as a sophomore. At one time last season he held three University freestyle records, and this year he has swum consistently well in the 100-yd., 200-yd. and 500-yd. free, setting new University marks of 4:41.9 in the 500 at the Easterns and lowering his own 200-yd. free standard to 1:43.59 a week before against Yale.
Jonkheer, who seems to perform best in the pressure situations, made the six-man finals of the 100-yd. breast stroke at the Easterns and proceeded to finish fourth with a new Harvard record time of 1:01.19. His important, and unexpected second against Dartmouth in January in the 200-yd. breast clinched the upset win over the Big Green.
The addition of the colorful, flamboyant Jonkheer as co-captain should complement the quiet efficiency of Mitchell, and hopefully the two will add the Eastern crown to the dual meet championship the team took this year.
