VES Faculty OK's New Open Tutorial To Start Next Fall

The Visual and Environmental Studies Faculty has approved a proposal to offer a new open tutorial for next Fall.

The idea of the open tutorial, which will mix concentrators from all three classes and place a strong emphasis on creative work, was suggested last month by the Visual and Environmental Studies Student Faculty Committee for Curriculum Reform.

The Department is offering a new sophomore tutorial for credit this Spring to test some of the ideas that will be incorporated into the open tutorial.

The members of the Committee proposed the open tutorial because they felt that it could provide a core experience for concentrators by giving them a chance to work on their own projects under the direction of a special tutorial staff, with work space and materials provided.

The Committee also recommended second-level courses in printmaking, drawing and painting, advanced courses in film and still photography, expansion of offerings in television, and an introductory-level VES course that would be open to large numbers of students.
