Free McDonald's Quarter-Pounder hamburgers are the reward this year for those who donate blood to the Harvard-Radcliffe Blood Drive. McDonald's has printed 1800 Quarter Pounder coupons in anticipation of the drive, scheduled for December 3-7, 10 and 11.
The blood drive represents an attempt to meet the shortage of blood needed for transfusions in the Boston area. The shortage becomes particularly acute during winter holidays when accident totals climb.
The drive also seeks to reduce the reliance on blood from commercial blood banks. The danger of contracting hepatitis from these banks is several times higher than for donated blood.
Drive co-chairman Earl Steinberg '74 said yesterday last year's winter drive was the most successful ever, collecting 1666 pints--an increase of 230 over the previous year.
As a result of the drive's past success, the American Red Cross has guaranteed free blood if needed to all members of the University and their immediate families. The Red Cross guarantee is good anywhere in the United States.
The Drive is sponsored by The Harvard Crimson, The Harvard Independent, Committee on Housing and Undergraduate Life, University Health Services and the Faculty Wives. This years co-chairmen are Steinberg, Joan Baca '74 and Tom Ahlborn '75.
Students who have not yet registered may walk in at Memorial Hall any time between 10:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or may call 495-5782 to make an appointment.
