Petering Out

[with apologies to Edgar Allen Poe]

Lift a glass of Christmas cheer--

Harvard cheer--

For our garbled winter schedule and vacation drawing near.

But as we scramble, scramble, scramble,

For our holiday retreats,

Let our thoughts begin to ramble

From the shiny holly bramble

To our Crimson-clad athletes.

Beating time, time, time

To my eulogistic rhyme

As we sing magestic praises, and quaff a glass of beer,

Let us cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer,

Cheer, cheer, cheer.

Drink a toast, salute our jocks, give a cheer!

Give a lusty hockey cheer--

Loud and clear!

As an octupus from Section 18 smacks you in the ear,

Watch the team of hometown Billy

Slashing proudly down the ice,

Launching slap-shots willy-nilly,

Driving Bobby Watson silly,

With that pucking stick device.

Hear them scream, scream scream,

For that fleeting playoff dream,

'Cause if things don't fall in place, we'll have to wait until next year.

Raise a cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer,

Cheer, cheer, cheer.

Fix the time-clock, bribe the refs, and raise a cheer.

For our cagers and our swimmers

Give a chee!

If Satch and Ray survive the breaks, this could be our year.

With an Yntema and Brumwell

Essick's bursting at the seams.

Sanders's patterned O has come well,

Jenkins, Needleman have done well,

Causing wet and hardwood dreams!

We shall see, we shall see,

If the creaky IAB

Can support the crowds inside without collapsing in the rear.

Go and cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer,

Cheer, cheer, cheer.

It's so near, the future's here, go and cheer. [Happy Holidays--P.A.L.]
