Adams House is facing a coffee cup crisis as the number of white plastic cups remaining in the dining hall continues to plummet far below the number of students in the House.

Robert Martin, manager of the Adams dining hall, was remarkably calm as he revealed that only 200 cups remained of the 1300 with which the dining hall began the year.

Martin noted that the crisis need not warrant widespread student alarm. He emphasized that rumors that cups would soon be rationed by issuing students a single cup with their name on it were completely unfounded. There was no indication that next year's freshmen would be asked to bring cups from home.

Martin emphasized the various at- tempts he has made to convince students to bring the cups back. His approach focuses primarily on posting friendly requests at strategic points in the dining hall.

Currently the milk machine carries a message that cleverly combines humor, an appeal to the students' self-interest, and an outright plea for cooperation. The message reads, "Please bring back our cups. We need them to wash and you want them for coffee. 'Our loss is yours also.'"

Martin discounted the idea that the cup pilfering could be some new form of student civil disobedience. Dining hall officials did not reveal whether the cup loss had any relation to students' attitudes towards food service.

Other Houses noted that they were also losing significant numbers of cups during the year but none seemed to have as serious a problem as Adams. However, when asked whether they were losing many cups, an employee in the Currier House dining hall said, "We lose everything here.
