Tina N. Rathborne '73 became the first woman president in the history of the Harvard Signet Society in elections held Monday. The society went coed last year.
Outgoing president Michael J. Ryan '72 called Rathborne's election "utterly fantastic."
"Actually, she seemed to be a very logical candidate," Ryan added yesterday.
Rathborne was elected from a field of four candidates. Also elected were Winthrop Minot '73 as vice president and Walter Isaacson '74 as secretary.
Last Saturday the Signet Society held its annual dinner. Most alumni attending the dinner seemed pleased with the prospect of a woman president, Rathborne said yesterday. "But what concerned them most was the occupation of Massachusetts Hall," she added.
The Signet Society is an organization of Harvard people with an interest in literature and the arts, many of them affiliated with undergraduate publications and the Loeb. Past members include Robert Frost '01, T.S. Eliot '10, Norman Mailer '43 and John H. Updike '54.
