The varsity lacrosse team seeks an upset today in Providence, when the Crimson faces a Brown team shooting for its fourth consecutive New England Championship.
Brown, along with Cornell, is the squad to beat in the Ivy League this season. Fourteen Bruin lettermen have returned from last year's 11-3 team, which was the best in the school's history.
Co-captains Bill Kavan and Joe DeDonato head Brown's defense, its strongest position. Last season, Kavan was first-team All-Ivy and second-team All-American, while DeDonato was second-team All-Ivy.
The Bruins' midfield has outscored the attack so far this year, notching 32 of Brown's 54 goals. However, two of the three starting midfieldmen will not play today because of injuries, and the third will go into action with a slight muscle pull in one thigh.
Brown's attackmen began the season slowly but have improved, tallying 28 times in their last three games. Junior Stephen Russo leads the team in scoring, with 13 goals and 11 assists.
The loss of Bob Scalise has hurt the Bruins' offense, Scalise, who graduated last year, won All-American honors twice and notched an impressive 121 goals in his three seasons as Brown's crease attackman.
Broken Foot
Harvard's defense faces the task of stifling Brown's attack without the skills of John Taliaferro, who discovered yesterday that he had suffered a broken foot in the Princeton game last Saturday. Junior Larry Uhl will replace him.
At midfield, co-captains Verdi DiSesa and Bob Green, and junior Garth Ballantyne will start as usual for the Crimson.
John Hagerty leads Harvard's attack, which played its best match of the season last Wednesday at UMass, scoring eight of the Crimson's nine goals. Hagerty, the team's high scorer, has compiled 16 points.
Brown currently holds a 5-2 record, having won its two Ivy League games against Yale and Dartmouth. Harvard, now 1-5, is seeking its first Ivy League victory of the year.
