Pins Mark Intramural Semis; Grapplers Up for Mat Finals

Pins by Steve Hamilton and Mark Cancian highlighted the semi-final round of the intramural wrestling tournament yesterday at the Indoor Athletic Building.

Freshman Hamilton, wrestling in the 145 lb. class, iced John Harper in twenty-two seconds, while Cancian, wrestling in the house 167 lb. class, pancaked Bud Baker in the second period.

Other highlights of the second round included Pete Quesada's shutout of Jack London in the 152 lb. class, and John Addison's first period pin in the frosh 167 lb. class.

Today, all four grapplers will be competing, along with 30 other house and freshman wrestlers, in the 17 final bouts. The championship round will start at 4 p.m. on the main floor of the IAB.

The final promises to be full of action, with key match-ups expected in the freshman 145, 152, 177 and 191 lb. classes and in the house 123, 137, 160, 167 and 177 lb. classes.

Both Hamilton and Quesada will face touch competition in their respective opponents Dave Barlow and Stuart Sundiun, while Mike Fitts, a winner in a close decision Tuesday, will take on Charlie Swanson in the frosh 177 lb. class.

In an all Mathews' final, freshman John Foreman, who pinned his first opponent, will face Carl Kempner.

As for the house finals, Jay Galeski, a former varsity wrestler, appears to be a clear favorite over Steve Baily in the 123 lb. class, but the 137 lb. match shapes up as one of the best on the card. Nick Whitman, who iced his first foe, will take on a touch opponent in Rick Binder.

While Cancian opposes Wess Shofner, former freshman grappler Bill McClarnon will tangle with Marshall Jones. As for the 177 lb. class, Kyil Zaidan, who pinned his last opponent, will meet Steve Kistner.
