Seventh and eighth place finishes by alpine captain Ben Steele in the slalom events were the sole bright spot for Harvard's beleaguered ski team last weekend, as the Crimson placed a disappointing seventh among eight entrants in the annual Williams College Carnival.
Aided considerably by unusually high winds, which cancelled the jumping event. Dartmouth edged Vermont by nine-tenths of a point for the carnival title. The Catamounts, who had the East's top jumper in Peter Kongsli, were heavy favorites to overtake Dartmouth on the final day of competition.
For Harvard, it was the second consecutive dismal showing. The Crimson, seventh-place finishers at Dartmouth last week, edged St. Lawrence by little more than a point, and trailed sixth-place Maine 275.3 to 271.6. Harvard will compete against essentially the same field at the Middlebury Carnival next Friday.
