"House basketball is pretty much a couple of good individuals and other guys that don't get in their way," noted Radcliffe's Carter Dodge, as the 'Cliffe squad bounded to the Intramural League lead last night with a 46-37 win over a tough Leverett contingent.
The victory gave the 'Cliffe a season record of 9-1, putting it half a game ahead of Leverett, which stands at 8-1, Leverett will now play third-place Winthrop.
Both teams played tight, fast games that tended to become somewhat disorganized, leading to the great number of fouls. The referees closely followed the action, however, and prevented any of the flare-ups that often mark inter-House play.
Radcliffe dominated play throughout the first half. Led by former varsity players Vin Lackner and Bill Newkirk, who controlled and motivated the team. One 'Cliffe player said, "We've been coached and organized throughout by Vinny." Leverett did not fall far behind and by the end of the half, Radcliffe led by only four points.
In the second period, the 'Cliffe stayed ahead though Leverett continued to pressure, often forcing them onto the defense. The major factor in the half, however, was the great number of fouls--especially on the Leverett squad.
With the 'Cliffe now leading the league by one half game, the teams move into the championship round-robin. Accordingly, the top six teams play each other; this, along with the regular season tally, will determine the championship.
In B-team action, the 'Cliffe squad overwhelmed unsuspecting Leverett, 47-17.
