Harvard's freshman hockey team extended its record to 10-2 yesterday, overpowering a tough Boston University squad at Watson Rink with a three-goal third period and a winning goal by Jim Thomas in sudden death to win 5-4.
Earlier this season, the Crimson dropped a tough contest to B.U., squandering a 5-1 lead, to lose in over-time, 6-5. Yesterday's well-earned victory was a different story as the Frosh icemen grasped, in Coach Tim Taylor's words, "poetic justice."
The first period was evenly played, B.U. gaining a slight advantage with a goal by the Terriers' Peter McCann at 19:48.
B.U. seemingly dominated the second period, although in Coach Taylor's words. "It wasn't really unbalanced." The fired-up B.U. squad scored three goals, two of them in power-play situations.
The Crimson scored once on a play by Leigh Hogan with an assist by Ted Thorndike at 11:33. At the end of the period the score was 4-1. The B.U. fans thought it was all over.
The third period was all Harvard, as the stickmen played their finest game. The first Harvard goal of the period was scored by Thomas at 5:58. Steve Dagdigian soon followed with a goal at 8:01 and the score was finally tied by center Dave Gauthier at 18:30.
The winning goal was scored by Thomas at 1:44 and the freshmen won their finest game, 5-4.
