With a cry of "Veni, Vidi, Vici," the Harvard track team left West Point on Saturday with its first significant victory of the season. The thinclads defeated the Cadets, 64-54, in a meet that wasn't even as close as the score indicated.
Harvard co-captain John Quirk set a meet record in the mile, while Dewey Hickman tied the meet record while placing first in the hurdies.
Quirk won the mile in 4:12.0, ahead of Army's Clint Minor, Jim Hughes finished third for Harvard in 4:14.7.
In the hurdles, Dewey Hickman was timed at 7.5 seconds, ahead of two cadets.
Harvard went into the mile and two-mile relays, worth five points each, with a 20-point bulge. The meet thus on ice, Harvard coach Bill McCurdy decided not to run Nick Leone or Austin O'Connor in the mile, and Quirk and Bob Clayton in the two-mile.
Harvard's Jay Hughes won double victories in the shot put and weight throw. He huried the shot 50 ft. 3 1/4 in., and threw the weight 58 ft. 3 1/1 in. The Crimson's Leon Sharpe placed second in the shot.
The Crimson swept to victory in the pole vault, Both Jim Kleiger and Blayne Heckel vaulted 15 ft., but Kleiger took first on the basis of fewer misers. Don Berg finished third with 14 ft. 6 in.
Nick Leone captured first place in the crucial 600, and in a surprising performance, Crimson freshman Joel Peters took second over Army's highly-touted Cort Bivins, Leon's time was 1:12.8.
In another surprise, Army swept the two-mile, Harvard's Ric Rojas and Bill Durrette swapped leads through the first mile of the race, but Durrette dropped out of the running after the first half. With a half-mile to go three Cadets passed Rojas, who could not catch up despite a bid near the end.
Les Alm, Army's top cross country runner, finished first in 9.02.6.
In the 1000, Bob Clayton won a pivotal victory in 2:12.6, with Quirk taking third in 2.13.6
