Duet for Cannibals. Dark lady of American letters Susan Sontag made this first film in 1970. At the time of its Cambridge premiere, a Crimson review which Sontag thought nearly definitive described the work as an attack on bourgeois notions of culture and society through the manipulation of film narrative cliches and excepted audience . The Marxist author of that review found the film exciting others didn't.
Monika. Part of the festival of rarely shown Bergman films at the Brattle. This is supposedly Bergman's most explicitly sexual work; given the erotic Impact of fragments of his other films, it should be powerful.
Sorrow and the pity. The latest of a string of fine films booked into the Harvard Brattle chain. An already legendary 1970 documentary by Marcel Ophulus (son of Max) it examines life in WW 11'S occupied France with a Collection of interview with national leaders, spies and various inhabitants Of the industrial city of Clermont-Ferrand. The historical view the film Presents may be fragmentary, even misleading; but the human range covered is Powerfully complete. We not only hear heroic, week, tragic actions explained, but get some inkling of what these actions meant to the rest of the lives of the participants.
