Quaker, Crimson Booters Roll In Preparation for Showdown

With Penn's 6-0 shutout of Princeton and Harvard's 7-2 romp over Dartmouth last weekend, the stage is set for the showdown match Saturday between these two unbeaten clubs that will, in all probability, decide the Ivy soccer title.

Both teams snapped back from lethargic first-half performances to break halftime ties and coast to easy wins.

Harvard exploded for five second-half tallies to unknot a 2-2 halftime tie and destroy any upset dream the Big Green may have brought down to Cambridge. Harvard outshot Dartmouth 31-8 as goalie Steve Kidder needed to make only six saves.

Chris Papagianis, having the best day of his career, chalked up three goals and three assists, to bring his league-leading scoring total to a record 13 points (six goals, seven assists).

His output to date ties the Ivy scoring record set last season by Crimson teammate Felix Adedeji, who added an assist against Dartmouth to lift his point total to seven (six goals, one assist) and remain second to Papagianis in the league.

Harvard's BentHinze is tied with Penn's John Burke for third place in the scoring race with six points, while the Crimson's Dragan Vujovic and the Quaker's George Otiento and Steve Baumann are next on the list with five points apiece.

At Princeton last Saturday, the Tigers held heavy favorite Penn to a scoreless tie at the half. However, Burke and Otiento scored three goals each in the last 45 minutes and the Quaker defense remained impenetrable, as Penn won its third Ivy contest to keep pace with Harvard.

The Quakers outshot Princeton, 67-4, and Penn goalie Jim Miller was forced to make only four saves as he recorded his first Ivy shutout of the season.

In other Ivy action, Cornell fought through the usually strong defensive game used by Yale, to beat the Elis, 3-0. Chris Agoliati took an awesome 18 shots at Yale's Ken Pasternak, scoring the Big Red's first two goals.
