Harvard will hire about 14 students to patrol the Houses and Yard for fires between midnight and 8 a.m., Stephen S. J. Hall, vice-president for Administration, announced Tuesday.
Four students will patrol a specified route each night checking for fires. "The students on patrol will carry two-way radios so that if they spot any disturbances, they can call University police," Hall said.
No Arms
The guards will not be armed and will not be allowed to make any arrests, he said.
"I wouldn't describe them as auxiliary police or anything like that. Rather it just puts another person in a uniform on the streets and in that way will help to reduce crime." Hall said.
The patrols will begin as soon as Harvard has hired enough students to start regular tours. Six students had applied for positions by Tuesday.
The students will patrol during those hours when superintendents are not on duty in the Houses and will supplement existing fire precautions.
