Steiner to Take Heimert E-House Seat for Spring

Daniel Steiner '54, general counsel to the University, will become acting master of Eliot House during the Spring semester of this year, replacing Alan Heimert '49, Cabot Professor of American Literature, who will be on leave.

Steiner has been at Harvard since 1969, when he came to be secretary to the University Committee on Governance. Since 1970 he has filled the new post of general counsel, handling legal aspects of University affairs and acting as a general trouble-shooter for Massachusetts Hall.

Before coming to Harvard, Steiner was staff director of the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission, a post he lost in the change of administrations.

Number Two

Steiner is the second non-academician to be appointed a Harvard Housemaster. The first was F. Skiddy von Stade, Jr. '37, dean of Freshmen, who has been Master of Mather House since 1968.
