The Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) announced its 1971 All-Star team yesterday, but League champion Harvard was left high and dry with only one man on the team-All-American co-captain Pete Varney.

The most notable omissions from Harvard's standpoint are outfielder Dan DeMichele, the only All-EIBL player on last year's Crimson squad, and pitcher Bill Kelly.

DeMichele not only made the All Star team-chosen annually by the League coaches-last season, but he was the EIBL batting champion as well with a .477 average.

This season, DeMichele relinquished the batting title to teammate Varney but still ranked as one of the biggest batting threats in the League. Kelly was no less effective on the mound, and pitched a pair of two-hitters against EIBL runner-up Cornell-one in the playoff game which decided the League's representative to the College World Series.

Thomas Elected Captain

In other baseball news, the Crimson elected junior third baseman Mike Thomas captain for the 1972 season as it returned Tuesday from the College World Series in Omaha.

Thomas, who broke into the starting lineup midway through his sophomore season, is known primarily for his fielding ability, even though he provided key hits against Cornell and at the World Series. He batted .288 in 1970, but his average fell to below .250 this season.
