"After every goal I'd say to myself, 'you can only do your own job, there's not much you can do to help our defense today,' " M. I. T. lacrosse goalie Jerry Horton whispered last night. Horton had contracted laryngitis after 25 Harvard goals had set all-time Crimson single-game records, for most goals and most points scored.
The 25-4 Crimson victory contrasted strongly with a pre-season scrimmage against the Engineers which Harvard narrowly won, 10-6. Coach Bruce Munro's squad was paced yesterday by John Hagerty and Phil Zuckerman, who netted four goals apiece. Zuckerman also recorded six assists.
The Crimson attack levelled a whopping 79 shots at the hapless Horton. "I kind of lost track," Horton said. "They'd just weed their way through our mid-field and score. I didn't think they were shooting that well. They could have scored a lot more."
Horton saved 19 shots: those he didn't added up to two more than the previous Crimson mark, set last year against the Engineers. The 43 points established a new standard by three.
Crimson midfield play yesterday was excellent, and Harvard won almost every face off. Many of the Engineers' clearing passes were intercepted and promptly rammed past Horton.
Meanwhile, Harvard's defense kept the pressure off goalie Joe Walker, who had to stop only 14 shots. Defenseman Chris Doyle even got into the scoring act with a length-of-field rush for a goal.
