Sailors Soar Through N.E. Regatta

For the second consecutive weekend Harvard sailors dominated New England college sailing, as two-time All-American Robbie Doyle walked away with the New England Single-Handed Sailing Championships Sunday on the Charles. His teammates also grabbed third, fifth, eighth and ninth in the ten-man final.

Doyle turned the regatta into a race for second place as he took six firsts, one second and a third on the way to his third consecutive New England championship. Last year he also won the national collegiate and the national open single-handed championships.

The University of Rhode Island's Henry Bossett took second place with 35 points, narrowly edging the Crimson's Abbott Reeve with 38. Dave Little (41 points), Charlie Koch (56 points) and Rud Istvan (57 points) finished fifth, eighth and ninth for Harvard, respectively.

After the first three races Reeve held a one-point lead over Doyle for first, but then the wind began to pick up and the light-124-pound-Reeve ran into trouble. But Bossett was not doing superbly, and with seven races completed Reeve was in second place by a point. Reeve managed only a seventh in the final race, while Bossett took a third to grab second place overall.

Preliminary elimination for the championships narrowed the field down to 23 last month, and on Saturday another round of elimination knocked out 13 more. In Saturday's two heats, U.R.I.'s two skippers Bossett and Skip Whyte won. Koch and Little, and Doyle and Reeve finished second and third.
