"We want to focus on the issues, not on the man," Mendelsohn emphasized. "But we do not want to discuss foreign policy in general-we want to discuss the war itself, the continuation of large-scale bombing, and the reasons who the bombing has gone on for over three years."

"We do not regard you as an immoral man," the original letter to Kissinger says. "Yet you are one of the key architects and administrators of an immoral policy."

About the prospects of Kissinger holding another on-the-record discussion, Mendelsohn said, "He might well recognize what we remind him of-that we are acting in some large measure as representatives of an educational community. Such a community insists on open discussion of the most crucial issues, and that is just what this is."

In a post-script to his letter, Kissinger says. "I do not plan to release this letter or make any public comment." The CRIMSON obtained the letter from one of the 68 Faculty members who received a copy of it from Kelman and Mendelsohn on Friday.
