Three years ago, track coach Bill McCurdy worried about the Dartmouth track meet. Half of his squad was going to be at the Penn Relays. Could the remainder top the Indians?
Three years ago, the Crimson won every running event and drubbed the Big Green by 70 points. Two years ago, with half the squad in Philadelphia again, Harvard took 15 of the 18 Dartmouth events. Last year, the bottom of the Crimson beat the Indians, 111-39.
While 11 Crimson trackmen chase wrist watches in Philadelphia, the remainder of the Harvard squad today will once again worry, but eventually beat, Dartmouth in Hanover, N. H.
Results of yesterday's Penn Relay events were not available last night. Trying to handle 7000 entrants, Penn Relay Headquarters were confused yesterday. "Hello, Relay Headquarters," the secretary answered. "No, we don't have any results here. Gee, I don't know who is keeping the times. But I can tell you that events one through 39 were run today and events 40 through 155 will be run tomorrow."
This is Your Life
Track coverage at Dartmouth is much simpler. The Daily Dartmouth has had several "this is your life" stories on weightmen Bill Diuneen (hammer), Wayne Moody (shotput), and Ted Moody (shotput). Not that the Dartmouth is that aggressive in its track coverage. So far this spring it has found less than half a dozen other track members worth mentioning.
In its only outing of the season, the Indians finished a very distant second to Northeastern in the Boston College Relays last weekend.
The Dartmouth Trio
But the Crimson weightmen should be challenged by Dartmouth's trio. Dineen was an NCAA meet finalist in the hammer last year as a junior. Ted Moody holds the Indians' shotput record, but younger brother Wayne, only a sophomore, passed his brother in competition this winter.
Another top performer for the Big Green is high jumper Tom Byron, who cleared 6' 8" during the indoor season.
But Harvard overcame a 15 point field deficit against Princeton last weekend, so the Crimson should come through the weekend with its undefeated record intact. -R. W. G.
