Freshman freestyler Fred Mitchell will be the only Harvard swimmer at next weekend's AAU meet in Pullman, Wash.
Mitchell set the Harvard records in both the 200-free (1:45.9) and 500-free (4:47.4) this winter, but was not eligible for the NCAA's because of an Ivy League rule forbidding freshman participation in such events. At Pullman, Mitchell will represent Santa Clara Swimming Club.
He is now home in Palo Alto, Calif., working out with his Santa Clara teammates. Before leaving, Mitchell spent the toughest three weeks of his swimming career training at the IAB. The strain resulted not only from the long workouts but from practicing alone.
That same weekend, Harvard teammate Tim Chetin, also from Palo Alto, will swim the individual medley and breaststroke at the Canadian Nationals.
