Weiland Named 'Coach of Year'

Cooney Weiland received the Spencer Penrose Coach of the Year Award from the American Hockey Coaches Association last weekend. The honor was Weiland's second, as he also won the award in 1955.

Harvard's head coach for 21 years, Weiland is one of only five hockey coaches in the country to have won over 300 games. Weiland is retiring with an overall record of 315-174-17.

Weiland is a former National League Hockey scoring champion, all-star, and Stanley Cup coach. In 1929-30, Weiland scored 73 points in 44 games for the Boston Bruins. As a coach, Weiland led the Bruins to an NHL season championship and the Stanley Cup title in his first season, 1938-39.

As a collegiate coach, Weiland has directed Harvard to eight Ivy League titles, two ECAC championships, and five Beanpot trophies.
