Harvard football coach Joe Restic yesterday announced the appointment of four assistant coaches. Restic has selected two of his former assistants at Hamilton, line coach Carl Schuette and offensive backfield coach Al Bruno, defensive backfield coach Ralph Goldston from the Montreal Allouttes, and former University of Massachusetts line coach George Karras.
Schuette began his coaching career as an assistant at the Naval Academy, and also coached Colgate before taking a position with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Bruno played collegiate football at Kentucky where he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. Bruno joined Restic at Hamilton after playing in the Canadian League for the Toronto Argonauts.
Goldston, a black coach who will work with receivers as well as the defensive backfield, played with the Eagles and in the Canadian League before joining the Montreal coaching staff. Karras was head coach at Wichita before he accepted the role as assistant at Massachusetts.
Restic has also selected a fifth coach but he is not sure if he will be used primarily as a backfield or a line coach. The first four appointments will be approved by the Corporation on Monday, while the fifth appointment will be held until the end of the month.
Restie said each of his original five selections accepted his invitation to join him at Harvard.
