The Brown soccer team drubbed Bridgeport in Providence yesterday, 4-1. in the first round of the NCAA New England Regional playoffs.
Icy field conditions postponed until today the Harvard-Southern Connecticut playoff game, scheduled to take place here yesterday. The Brown team's victory means that it will face the winner of today's match in the second round of competition for the NCAA New England crown.
Harvard coach Dana Getchell, who scouted yesterday's playoff game, reported "considerable improvement" in the Brown squad, which lost to the Crimson earlier this season, 4-1.
"Brown didn't play their normal sock-'em-up, excessively physical ball game," Getchell said. "Instead they worked for short passes and ball control. They showed more finesse against Bridgeport than I've ever seen from them," he said.
Getchell noted in particular the fine teamwork between the Bruin backfield and their wingers, Henry Jessup and Dick Lay. "If Harvard ever does get into a playoff with Brown, the speed and power of those wings will make it a damn touch match for us." Getchell said.
