Former B-Ball Star Named Assistant Coach

Ernest Hardy '70, captain of the 1969-1970 basketball team, has returned to Harvard to assist coach Bob Harrison.

In his capacity as assistant, Hardy will use his experience in working with the big men on both offense and defense. During his senior year, Hardy set a Harvard record for the most rebounds in a single season.

New Coach Optimistic

In an interview yesterday, Hardy said he looks forward to his new job. "If I can't play basketball, I like to be around it," he said. Hardy said he is very optimistic about this year's players, particularly the returning sophomores.

Hardy will work with the big men and help them develop their particular talents. "Each man has his own strengths and weaknesses. We plan to develop each man's strengths so that if we need it in a particular situation, we can call upon it," Hardy said.

Aggressiveness

Hardy said he will stress aggressiveness, especially for the big men. "The big men are going to be very physical this year." Hardy said. When asked to point out aggressive players, Hardy said. "Brian Newmark is a very heady ballplayer. He is what I call a real team player. Brain can go in and he will set up the other four so that they can score."

Hardy is not really sure he would like to eventually become a coach. While working as an assistant. Hardy hopes to do graduate work in economics.

Asked how long he would like to remain as assistant, Hardy replied, "I'll remain as assistant, Hardy replied, "I'll stay on as long as coach Harrison wants me and as long as feel I'm needed by the team."
