'Cliffe Netters Tie Wellesley, 4-4, In 'Instructional Practice Match'

Radcliffe's tennis team tied Wellesley, 4-4, yesterday in what coach Jean Evans called "an instructional practice match."

"We learned a lot of things from the match," Evans said. "A lot of our people aren't quite together yet, so early in the year."

All three singles players won their matches, but the doubles teams lost four of five matches.

"This is the first experience some of the doubles pairs have had playing together," Evans said, "since we had been practicing singles for the New England Collegiate Tournament for Women last weekend."

Joy Skon '73, number one singles, swept her match, 6-0, 6-0.

Meg Morgan '73 won 6-2, 7-5. "Joy won so easily that Meg's match seemed really close. It was a good one to watch," Evans said.

Radcliffe's number three singles player, Sarah Stearrs '75, took her match, 6-3, 6-2.

Radcliffe's only doubles winners were Ruth Erhman '75 and Marci Davis '75, 6-2, 7-6.

"The doubles matches were full of errors," Evans said. "They should be ironed out during winter practice or the spring season. I thought we would really swamp them, but we only held on by the skin of our teeth," Evans said.
