'Cliffe Wins Swim Contest

Radcliffe's swimming team, led by a strong nucleus of freshman swimmers, opened its intercollegiate season with an easy 65-27 triumph over Brandies last Friday.

Freshman Roann Costin set a Radcliffe pool record with a time of 2:05.2 in the 200-yd, freestyle. She returned in the 40-yd. butterfly to take a second first place with a time of 23.0. Costin also anchored two successful Radcliffe relay teams.

Senior Julie Anderson was the meet's only other double winner. Anderson won both the 40-yd. and 100-yd. breaststroke events and also swam in the opening medley relay.

Other successful freshmen were Connie Cerville, who won the 100-free in 59.9 and swam both relays, and Jean Sinnott, who swam the 80-yd. individual medley in 55.8 for a first place.

Completing the Radcliffe rout, senior Kathy Fletcher swam the backstroke in the victorious medley relay and then won the 40-yd. freestyle in 20.9. Radcliffe's final winner was Andrea Hedin, who came back from a second place finish in the 40-yd. backstroke to win the 100-yd. backstroke.

Brandeis was without several of its top swimmers due to illness. The Judges hope to revenge their loss next Tuesday in a quadrangular meet with Northeastern, Mt. Holyoke, and Radcliffe at the Mt. Holyoke pool.
