Board costs for Harvard undergraduates will rise $80 for 1970-71.

The increase will jump the cost of eating in a House dining hall from $720 to $800.

Charles G. Hurlbut, director of food services, said yesterday that higher salaries for dining hall workers and increased maintenance costs had made the increase necessary.

The increase, coupled with last year's $200 tuition increase, brings the cost of a year at Harvard to $3980-$2600 for tuition, $580 for room, and $800 for board.

New Plan

Board fees may increase again after the Fall term due to a new food plan to be considered by the Committee on Houses and Undergraduate Life in the Fall.

Unveiled as a result of request from H-R-Hillel and the November Action Coalition (NAC), the proposed meal plan would allow undergraduates to sign up for less than the 21 meals a week presently required.

The plan-first tried out experimentally last Spring-would allow students to pay for only lunches and dinners or to omit weekend meals.

May said last week, however, that the cost of allowing some students to sign for less than the full 21 meals would probably require another rise in the cost of the full meal plan.

NAC and Hillel requested the plan for political and religious reasons, respectively. NAC sought to get students to sign up for a rebate to be donated to the Panthers, while Hillel requested that Orthodox Jewish students not be forced to pay for meals during Passover.
