History Department To Accept 'Credit'

The History Department decided last night to let its students count "pass" and "credit" courses for concentration this term. But the department said that all honors candidates except seniors will have to make up the courses with graded ones sometime later.

Under the department's ruling, all seniors-as well as junior and sophomore non-honors candidates-may count this semester's unguarded courses for concentration. But sophomore and junior honors candidates "will be expected to present 6 1/2 graded courses as under the present regulations." the department said.

Individual students under "special academic circumstances" may petition for release from the requirement. Bernard Bailyn, professor of History, said last night that the special circumstances might include students who "have carefully planned their curriculum and have a limited amount of play, such as premedical students concentrating in history."
