After a nine-day rest the Crimson golf team returns to competition this afternoon with a match against Williams and Boston College at the Concord Country Club.
The Harvard golfers had a match scheduled for last week against Amherst and Tufts, but it was postponed when an open course could not be found in the Boston area. "We played on six holes of the Concord today, and they looked pretty good. The rest of the course should be open for us tomorrow," captain Yank Heisler said yesterday.
The last match the Crimson played was against Navy-a 4-3 victory-on the last day of its southern tour.
Few Crimson Veterans
Harvard overpowered B. C. and Williams without trouble last year, defeating the Eagles, 7-0, and the Ephmen, 6-1. Both teams have five returning veterans, and they should give the Crimson-which will have only two lettermen teeing off-a tougher battle today.
The Eagles-who played 500 golf last year-will be led by captain Thomas Reardon in the number one position. Behind Reardon are seniors Dennis Perrone and Paul Flynn, and juniors Peter Dawson and Dave Turcott. Joining them are sophomores Brian Monihan and Steve Fermon.
But the Eagles' performance could be hampered by the current strike that has hit the B. C. campus. "I expect everyone to show up." Coach Eddie Carroll said last night, "but with the strike, I just won't know until match time tomorrow."
"If they all show up, we could be all right, but we're not expecting any spectacular performances," he added.
Williams has not had a strike, and its golf team, led by co-captains Jim Hewitt and Ted May, is playing better golf this year after a long successful southern tour. The southern tour really helped us this year, and our play has improved while we've been at home," co-captain May said last night.
Excuses, Excuses
The co-captains are joined by two other seniors, Rud Greason and Tom Jamieson, both two-year lettermen. "We would have had two other lettermen for the match against Harvard, but one left school and the other one has not come back to school." May said.
Cooch Owen will not be teeing off with his Crimson teammates this afternoon because of illness. "Cooch has an infection from blistered lips that he picked up in Florida. The infection crept down his throat, and he's had a temperature for the last week." Heisler explained last night.
As a result. Bob Cosby will play in the number seven spot, and everyone else will move up one position in the ladder.
