The decision to approve the new Sociology Department came at a special meeting after two weeks of intensive caucusing on the issue within the Soc Rel department.

The approved resolution, introduced by R. Freed Bales, professor of Social Psychology, was passed by a vote of 31 to 5, with 9 abstentions.
