To no one's great surprise, Joe Cavanagh has been elected captain of the 1970-71 Harvard hockey team. The skiers also chose their captains yesterday, selecting Alan Watson and Chris Ferner to lead the Crimson next year.
Cavanagh is one of Harvard's greatest hockey players, if not the greatest. He is the second highest scorer in Harvard history with still a year left to close in on Bobby Cleary's record 191 points.
As a sophemore, he was chosen to the All-Ivy. All-East, and All-American teams. He has won innumerable awards, including a trophy given to the best Americanborn college hockey player in the country.
Statistically, Cavanagh's junior year was not as impressive as his sophomore year. His points failed to equal his sophomore total of sixty-two, and he finished tied with George McManama in the scoring race.
However, it is hard to say that Cavanagh's performance was disappointing, although his drop in scoring may cost him another spot on the All-American team. Defensive mistakes forced coach Cooney Weiland to move Cavanagh to defense for six games-improving the defense but hurting Cavanagh's point output.
Unbalanced Line
Cavanagh also had to play five games without his linemates from freshman and sophomore year. Dan DeMichele and Cooch Owen, as Weiland searched for balanced line combinations early in the season.
Skiing co-captain Alan Watson, like Cavanagh, also finds himself without the degree of national prominence that he had attained in his sophomore year.
Ranked number one in the East in the giant slalom as a sophomore. Watson this year did not make the top 15. He decided to spend more time instructing a junior program this winter, and as his practice time declined, bi? performance suffered. Nevertheless, next year's Alpine captain did well in the last carnival.
Chris Ferner will lead the Nordic team. A?native of Norway, he picked up a first and three thirds in jumping competition this fall.
