A strong performance in all three Fall sports gave Matthews South a commanding lead in the freshman intramural competition, but it has now lost four straight basketball games and may be on the way down.
Last night a nonchalant, but talented, Pennypacker team routed Matthews South, Athletie director Craig Coit thought that his team might finally break out of its slump last night, but the game was never close.
"I'm kind of disappointed with the way our basketball team is doing," Coit said yesterday. "None of the games has been particularly close." Part of the explanation is the ineligibility of touch-football stars Stan Mark and Dave O'Leary Since both are on the freshman basketball team, they cannot play for their dormitory.
Eager Participation
Matthews South managed to pick up its large number of Fall points mostly through eager participation. It never forfeited a football game, found enough people for a full cross-country team, and had several competitors on the championship West Yard team. "This is a pretty decent dorm." Coit acknowledged.
Bastion of Jockdom
If Mathews South is to stay ahead of Holworthy. Fred Jewett's bastion of jockdom, it will be necessary to make up for the poor showing in basketball by doing well in wrestling, boxing, or squash.
Coit thinks that wrestling is the sport which his dormitory may very well dominate. There are three good ex-high school wrestlers and provably five others who are willing to step on the mat for the honor of Matthews South.
