Icemen Blast Northeastern, 12-0; Cavanagh Tallies 7 to Lead Rout

"You gotta remember, it was Northeastern," one fan said as he watched Harvard obliterate the Huskies, 12-0, in its opening game of the regular season. It may have been Northeastern, but it was also an extraordinary scoring exhibition by Harvard's captain, Joe Cavanagh and his senior line mates, Dan DeMichele and Cooch Owen.

Cavanagh picked up seven points,.. DiMichele notched a hat trick and the veteran first line collectively accounted for six of Harvard's goals.

The first line jumped on the Huskies for three quick goals and sophomores Dave Hynes and Bob McManama added two more after only six minutes of play to end the game for Northeastern. When Cavanagh fed DeMichele for Harvard's sixth goal at 1:10 of the second period, the Huskies forgot about trying to avert a shutout, and tried to salvage the evening with a fight.

The Harvard players were more eager to boost their individual statistics than lose their teeth however, and while the Huskies were skating back and forth from the penalty box, the Crimson added three more goals.

Harvard penalties slowed down the third period, but the Crimson still managed to break into double figures as Hynes and fourth line wing Jay. Riley collected their second goals. Cavanagh finished off the scoring on a great feed from sophomore defenseman Bob Muse, who picked up three assists during the game.

Northeastern goalie Dan Eberly had a rough night in the nets, turning away 33 of the 42 shots taken by the Crimson in the first two periods alone. He left the game after his shoulder had interfered with a Hynes wrist shot at the end of the second period.

Harvard's defense, the one possible weak link in a strong team was never tested as the Huskies managed only nine shots to the Crimson's 58. JV veteran Andy Burns played well defensively, decking Northeastern players three times on shoulder and hip checks.

The Huskies had more penalties than shots on goal, totaling 44 minutes in the box on 12 minor penalties and two ten-minute misconducts.
