Soccer Team Beats Amherst, 3-1; Third Period Goals Decide Game

Harvard's varsity boosters scored twice in a three-minute span of the third period and then coasted to an unimpressive 3-1 victory over Amherst yesterday on the Business School filed.

Senior Peter Bogovich scored two goals to lead the Crimson, but the really outstanding performances of the day were turned in by sophomores Emmanuel Ekkama, Rich Scott, and Demetrio Mena.

Inside halfback Ekkama used traps, short passes, and fancy footwork to dominate the midfield play. In a game characterized by long disorganized passing, Ekkama's precision play frequently brought applause from the stands.

Scott entered the game at right fullback in the third period and successfully contained Amherst wing Winnie Smith, who had posed several scoring threats in the first half.

Sophomore Mena did not play until the closing minutes, but just before the final gun, he set-up two of Harvard's most dangerous attacks with excellent passes through the fullback line.

The play of these three sophomores indicated that Harvard has not only an outstanding eleven but also a strong bench reserve.

What a Coach

Afraid to hold the ball around the more talented Crimson. Amherst spent most of the afternoon clearing the ball as far up field as possible. "Keep up those long passes," coach Peter Gooding yelled as though it were a secret strategy.

But his suggestion paid off in the opening minutes of the game when left link Rocky Spencer sailed a shot high into the air from the midfield line. The ball came down just below the goal crossbar and Crimson goalie Shep Messing could not jump high enough to stop the score.

Harvard was not unnerved by the goal. Charlie Thomas wove his way between several defenders and passed to Bogovich for the Crimson's tying score only a few moments later.

Only Time

In the third period, the Crimson began to work its short passing game and winning became only a matter of time. On a short kick from Thomas, Scott put a shot directly on goalie Randy Wheeler. Wheeler fumbled the ball, and Gomez quickly booted the mistake home.

With the pressure telling on the Jeffs, Harvard came right back and got a corner kick on a good rush by Gomez. Bogovich took the corner and put the ball right in front of the net, but an Amherst hand deflected it out of bounds.

On the ensuing penalty kick Wheeler made a lunging dive to his left while Bogovich calmly rolled the ball straight down the middle to end the scoring.

Amherst's fullback line played a very rugged body-contact game in front of the goal to block out Thomas and Gomez throughout the contest.

Chris Wilmot played a fine game as the sweeper fullback, preventing any shots on goal within the penalty area. Wilmot also almost led the Crimson in scoring as he took three headshots at Wheeler on cornerkicks.
