Employees Move Against Harvard Parking Expense

Employee action against Harvard's new paid parking policy is mounting slowly.

This week petitions will be circulating in all departments urging employees to oppose the policy and refuse to pay for a parking place or any Harvard parking fines until some agreement on the matter is reached. The Building and Grounds union has already refused to pay parking fees.

Tohey Plevin, a Lamont librarian and author of the petition, said yesterday that the petition effort is separate from the buildings and grounds action. If the petitions find widespread university sentiment against the policy she hopes the two groups can coordinate to get the parking rule changed.

To date the Harvard Administration has taken no action against the Buildings and Grounds union for refusing to pay the parking fee.

The petition also proposes that the area next to Harvard stadium could be used for free employee parking as an alternative to the parking fee system.
