Golf Team Trounces Bulldogs, 6-1; First Defeat of Yale in 12 Years

The Crimson golfers ended a 12-year drought be defeating he Yale golf team yesterday, 6-1.

The match, which was played at The Country Club in Brookline, marks the third time in the past thirty years that the Crimson golfers have beaten the Elis.

Not one match went into extra holes yesterday and only two lasted to the 18th. The Crimson golfers, although not as sharp as usual still manhandled the hapless crew from Yale.

Captain Bruce LoPucki teed up first against Yale's Hank Willner. After nine holes, LoPucki was on up. But in the second nine, he ran into early trouble. He was one down coming up to the 15th hole. LoPucki birdied the par 4, 315-yard hole and went on to win the next two holes. He finished with a 2 and 1 victory.

Jack Purdy, playing behind LoPucki, had a 4 and 2 victory over his Eli opponent, Paul Collier. Purdy, who was only one over par for the difficult course, birdied the 11, 12th and second holes.

Playing in the number three position, Yank Heisler had a fair day. "I putted well, but didn't make anything," Heisler said. His 2-up victory over Bob PoLackwich included birdies on the second and 12th holes.

Racking up his tenth victory of the season, Senior Barney Oldfield needed only two birdies to take the match from Yale's Hugh Norton. His 5 and 4 victory was the worst drubbing given to a Yale golfer yesterday.

Only One Loss

The only defeat Harvard suffered was Tommy Wynne's 1-up loss to Eli Larry Oxford. Oxford dropped a ten-foot down-hill putt on the last hole to keep the Elis from being shutout a second consecutive time this season. The Yale team lost 7-0 to Princeton on Saturday.

The number six man, Joe Tibbetts coasted by Brian Dowling's roommate chuck Stewart. Tibbetts beat Stewart 3 and 1, even though Stewart drove the ball farther than any other golfer in the match.

Sophomore Coach Owen, playing in the number seven position, defeated Yale's Craig Combs by a lopsided 5 and 4 victory.

Dynasty Ended

The golf dynasty of Yale Coach Al Wison seems to be coming to an end. After losing only nine times in fourteen seasons, the Yale golf team has already lost three times this year. In their past two losses, the Elis have managed to win only one match.

Although the Crimson golfers have been winning their matches easily, their individual scores have not been improving. Most of the golfers are still shooting five to ten strokes above par.

The golf team needs to shave off some of these extra strokes if they went to keep the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Crown. The Eastern begin this Saturday at Cornell. Harvard's toughest challengers at Cornell include Yale Princeton, and Navy.
