Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson, leading RBI man of the American League last year, announced his retirement from baseball yesterday. His announced retirement came after the Boston Red Sox had traded him to the Cleveland Indians Saturday.
Harrelson, wearing his usual mod outfit that has made him one of Boston's more flamboyant heroes, told a press conference that it was not economically feasible to leave Boston. Harrelson is involved in business dealings worth three-quarters of a million dollars.
The trade that Harrelson objected to was a three-player deal that sent him along with pitchers Dick Ellsworth and Juan Pizarro to Cleveland for catcher Joe Ascue and pitchers Sonny Siebert and Vincente Romo.
