Strauss Cup Race Tightens Up With Winthrop, Quincy Victories

Winthrop and Quincy gained ground in the Strauss Cup race this week as three intramural championships were decided. Winthrop won both the "A" basketball and skiing crowns, while Quincy captured the swimming title.

Winthrop's "A" team appears to be the U.C.L.A. of House basketball, having amassed a league leading 13-2 record prior to last night's game with Dunster. "We really have a magnificent team this year," beamed coach Joe Mullin, "in fact, some of the boys are actually varsity potential. We're starting to think Strauss now."

Fred Lane and Vern Horn are the team's leading scorers, but overall balance has been the key to its success.

Surprisingly, Winthrop's closest competitor has been Dudley House, who shared the top spot until the Lions edged them in a one-point overtime decision. In other contests, however, Winthrop has amply demonstrated its awesome power, crushing both Lowell and Quincy by almost 50 points.

Winthrop had further reason for thinking Strauss yesterday after its ski team captured the first intramural ski meet at the Boston Hill slopes. Eliot came in second, followed by Leverett.

In individual competition, David Arnold of Winthrop was the pacesetter. Dunster's Rockey Keeler, Eliot's David Grant and Steve Clark, and Leverett's Mike Egan rounded out the top five.

Led by an exciting sophomore duo, Quincy easily won the intramural swimming championship with an unblemished 8-0 record. Butterflyer Eric Almasy and freestyler John Wolz were the team's mainstays. They had substantial support from Greg Inman, who went undefeated in backstroke, Mark Buchanon, Tom Dryer, Tim Feige, and Donald Tuckwiller.
