WASHINGTON, D. C.-President Nixon announced last night that the U.S. will withdraw 50,000 more troops from Vietnam by April 15.
The action is being taken despite a substantial increase in enemy infiltration, Nixon said. He called the proposed withdrawal a "risk for peace."
Nixon warned that "if infiltration and the level of enemy activity increase while we are reducing our forces, [Hanoi] will also be running a risk."
Nixon called the pullout "another orderly step in our plan for peace in Vietnam." He said that progress in training the South Vietnamese army contributed to his decision.
The White House told newsmen that a total of 110,000 men will have been removed from Vietnam by mid-April-which will reduce the force level to only 434,000.
