The varsity soccer team put on its most dazzling performance of the season last night, as it romped over Boston University, 6-0. at the Terrier's Dickerson Field.
The Crimson scored its six goals in the first half. proving that neither the dim night conditions nor quick slippery Astroturf could deter a potent offense. Harvard sophomore Charlie Thomas led in scoring with two goals.
After seeing the wet Astroturf. Coach Bruce Munro was scared that Harvard might have a difficult time with the Terriers. "But they showed awesome power: they started passing and it happened," he said.
Coach Munro provided a possible catalyst when he started the second team. "I wanted to show the first team how B.U. looked I wanted to let them see what they were up against." he said.
The second team jumped on the field, and aggressively challenged the Terriers. They started a sizzling pace that the crack Terrier defense could not contain. Second string Inside Left Dick Nesto drove in the first goal at 7:45. The next five goals were knocked in by an angry first team.
Twenty-three seconds after Nesto's goal. Charlie Thomas drove in his first of two. His long shot from the corner fooled the Terrier goalie.
Even though the pace was quick. the Crimson kept control of the ball. Their hustle kept them ahead of the skidding. wet ball and they put so much pressure on the starting Terrier goalie that he had to be replaced.
Phil Kydes scored the next goal for Harvard, taking a long pass from Charlie Thomas. It made the score 3-0 and the first period still had two minutes to go.
The final three goals were scored in the second period by the Crimson's talented three-Solomon Gomez. Pete Bogovich and Charlie Thomas.
With such a comfortable margin. Coach Munro was able to substitue liberally. and he did. Everybody but one goalie saw action and he was waiting to go in when time ran out.
Looking ahead to Ivy competition, Munro smiled and said, "We're better than this."
