The Harvard University Band has had to drop plans for giving the halftime show at the November 9 game between the Green Bay Packers and the Baltimore Colts in Baltimore. Prohibitive costs forced cancellation of the plans. but the Administration was not in favor of the idea anyway.
A Harvard alumnus who has a financial interest in the Colts is reporiedly the one who suggested that the band give the show. but the band itself was first contacted by the Maryland Harvard Club.
Tim Feige '70. manager of the band, said that the Colts were going to pay the expenses through the Harvard Club, but when they learned that the project would probably cost $7000. they changed their minds. No other organization. including the band and the University was prepared to pay. either.
Feige talked to Dean Watson both Tuesday and yesterday to get the administration's views on the subject. "He said they wouldn't stop us. but they didn't like the idea." Feige said. Watson explained that the University was against professionalism and that it did not believe it would look good if the band went down only to play this halftime show.
"He said it was the same thing as letting the Patriots use Harvard Stadium, but I didn't really see that it's parallel." Feige said. The Patriots were denied use of the Stadium.
The band would have played the full halftime show. but the game is not scheduled for television.
