Only 5.5 percent of the students in David Riesman's Soc Sci 136 had finished the paper due today by 10:15 p.m. last night, according to a scientific survey conducted by the CRIMSON.
That student wished to remain anonymous.
Of the 18 persons interviewed, one-third had not yet started the 25-to-40 page paper, which is the only requirement for "Character and Social Structure in America." There are about 420 people in the course.
Eight of the 18 students were in the middle of writing and resented the interruption. The remaining three proudly described their condition as "just about finished."
One scholar, confessing that he had not started to write, was asked whether he had finished his research. "One is never finished with one's research," he said. "Let's say I'm familiar with the material."
Answers to the carefully-formulated question, "Where are you on your Riesman paper," ranged from "ha, ha" to "Where are you on your Riesman paper?"
