Carl Goodwin, Harvard's back-up man to Carter Lord at the offensive end slot for the last three years, was awarded the Jack Fadden Award at last Thursday's Varsity Club Senior Dinner. Rhodes scholar Tom Williamson, an All-Ivy safety, received the Francis H. Burr Scholarship.

The Fadden Award is given to an "athlete who overcomes physical adversity to make a contribution to his team." Williamson was awarded the Burr Scholarship for his "excellence in athletics and scholarship."

Goodwin, who has "good hands, good speed, and good potential," according to head football coach John Yovicsin, had a promising grid career cut short late in his freshman year when he broke an ankle against Yale.

Bad Break

He needed four operations to correct what trainer Jack Fadden termed "one of the worst breaks I've ever seen." The surgery weakened his leg, however, and as a result, he suffered an ulceration in pre-season practice as a sophomore. He was forced to sit out the season.

As a junior, he broke his leg in drills, and once again missed the entire schedule.

Last fall, despite a back and shoulder injury, he finally saw action, though he was unable to break into the starting lineup. "He might have been able to, if he had not been injured so much," said line coach Jim Fuela.
