While the varsity golf team has been garnering all the praise in recent weeks for its best season in history, a quiet Yardling squad has been rolling up an equally impressive record of its own.
The Crimson freshmen are undefeated in match play. Their 5-0 record includes two sweeps against M.I.T., a 4-3 win over Andover, and a 4-3 win over Yale, the first in four years.
Dartmouth No Challenge
Today, they follow the varsity to Dartmouth to take on the baby green, and their winning streak should not be challenged.
Yardling success can be partially attributed to the hard driving, go-for-broke captain of the team, Steve Owens, who is 4-1 for the year as the number one man.
But Owens is only one of five men who have been equally tough in match play. Bob Crosby, playing in the number four slot tomorrow, is 5-0; George Bachrach (3). Mike Stone (5), and Fred Sherman (6) all are 4-1 with Owens. Number two man John Holkins is 3-2 in match play. Dave Jones, who plays as seventh man in non-Ivy matches, has a 2-1 record.
At least six of the freshman golfers will have a shot at the varsity next year. But since only captain Bo Keefe will be graduating they will battle for a single slot.
