Kirkland Nudges Dudley in Stretch To Capture House Track Crown

Senior Pete Banys scored double wins in the high jump and 220 yard dash to lead Kirkland House to a one and a half point victory over second place Dudley in the House Intramural Track Championships Thursday and Friday.

Banys rolled up 28 of Kirkland's 46.5 points with his two firsts and a host of other consolation points. He took second in both the broad jump and 120 yard hurdles, fourth in the 100, and ran the third leg of Kirkland's half mile relay team which placed third. STRAUS POINTS 1. Winthrop  1149 2. Leverett  1101 3. Quincy  1041 4. Lowell  1021 5. Eliot  1020 6. Kirkland  895 7. Dunster  849 8. Dudley  677 9. Adams  510

While the majority of Kirkland's other points came on third and fourth places, Dudley House pushed its way into second almost entirely on first place points. Dudley's Bruce Jones blazed through the half mile in 2:00.0 for the first of his two victories, and then came back 45 minutes later to take the mile in 4:42.2.

Tom Dublin, also of Dudley, won the broad jump in 22' 1/2" on Thursday and the 120 hurdles Friday in 14.9 seconds.

Winning Heave

In Thursday's field events, Quincy House grabbed an early lead on Pete Hall's first place discus throw of 123' 6 1/2" and Bob Teske's 51' 5" winning heave in the shot.

Kirkland stayed in the running only because of Banys's 6' 4" leap in the high jump and his second in the broad jump. On Friday, Kirkland and Dudley shot out ahead of all the other Houses in the early dash events, so that it was a two team meet by the final half mile relay. Leverett nosed out Dudley to win the event in 1:37.6, but Kirkland took third to maintain the victory margin.

Weld North Wins

Weld North walked away with freshman track honors, snagging 34 points to Gray's 22. Wigglesworth West's 16 and Wigglesworth East's 14.

George Guild was the Weld workhorse. He ran the 100 in 10.2 and anchored the winning Weld North relay team to take double wins on Friday.
