Jubilee Weekend is in trouble. Ticket sales have been running way behind last year's and one of the major events planned has been cancelled.
Since the beginning of sales two weeks ago at the Freshman Union and in Radcliffe dining halls, the Jubilee Committee has sold only 370 of the 600 tickets available. In the past over 90 per cent of the tickets sold in the first two days.
In addition, two boat lines went back on verbal agreements last week and left Jubilee without its boat ride--scheduled to be the feature attraction for Friday night.
In place of the boat ride, the Committee is considering several alternatives--including a gala party at Carey Cage with higher quality entertainment than was previously planned.
Peter Bernbaum '71, chairman of the Jubilee Committee, gave four reasons for the poor ticket sales:
* the lack of any soul music during the entire weekend,
* the growing belief at Harvard that a big college weekend is unnecessary,
* the disorganized skit at the union which gave the impression that the weekend would be a wild orgy,
* the bad reputation which carried over from last year's Jubilee events.
No More Orgies
Bernbaum countered these criticisms by saying that the Committee went out of its way to avoid the orgy-like atmosphere of previous Jubilee weekends. "We have eliminated the objections of the students and the objections of the deans," he said.
But freshman response to everything Jubilee has done has been very weak. Almost all of the $19 tickets that have been sold went in the first few days, and signs are already appearing in the Union advertising extra tickets for as little as $5.
