Harvard's freshman hockey team, which survived two periods of ragged play to defeat Bowdoin, 5-3, on Tuesday, will oppose Dartmouth today in Hanover.
The Yardlings found themselves in a surprisingly tight contest against Bowdoin during the first two periods, in which they only held a one-goal lead, 3-2. Plagued by penalties (nine), their defense encountered stiff resistance in trying to clear the puck out of the defensive zone, and so their forwards could not sustain an attack.
But in the final period Harvard picked up, as Leif Rosenberger broke open the game with a goal and then an assist to Tom Paul for the fifth goal.
Front Line
Harvard showed talent on the front line where Bob Havern, Skip Barry, and Tom Paul played fine games, but the defense was neither quick enough or tough enough to stymie completely Bowdoin's offense.
The biggest question mark is in the goal, where Chip Wilson and Brian Dench seemed shaky. Wilson came out for the team late because the team only had one goalie, and that may account for some of the unsteadiness on his part. But neither seems to have the ability to give the freshmen the goaltending they will need it the unknown Dartmouth team should prove to be a top-flight opponent.
