Harvard football coach John Yovicsin was named New England Coach of the Year yesterday by the New England Football Writers Association.
Untouted at the beginning of the season, Harvard swept past eight opponents before battling Yale to a 29-29 tie and winning a share of the Ivy League title.
Yovicsin has compiled a 68-34-5 record in his 12 years as Harvard's head coach. He has guided the Crimson to a winning season every year since 1959.
In addition to being Harvard's first undefeated season since 1920, this year was the first time that one of Yovicsin's teams has gone unbeaten.
Yovicsin has won the Coach of the Year award twice before--in 1961 and 1966. The only other coach to earn the award three times since its inception in 1953 is Dartmouth's Bob Blackman.
